Technical Guidance

Box Types

Various options: External boxes (wood, woodcrete) mounted on walls; Integrated swift bricks built into the wall fabric during construction/renovation (preferred for longevity/aesthetics).

Location & Placement

High up on buildings (min 5m from ground), under eaves or soffits for protection. North or East facing aspects generally preferred to avoid overheating. Ensure clear flight path directly to the entrance (no obstructions like wires, trees). Group boxes together (swifts are colonial).

Installation

Fix external boxes securely. Integrate bricks during build, ensuring no mortar blocks entrance. Follow manufacturer instructions.

Maintenance

Minimal. Swifts manage their own nests. Boxes generally don't require cleaning. Check fixings periodically for external boxes.
