Technical Guidance
Types & Selection
Wide range available: Bat boxes/tubes/bricks (various designs for crevice/cavity dwellers); Bird bricks (sparrow terraces, starling boxes, swift bricks); Bee bricks/insect hotels. Select based on local species targets and building design.
Integration & Placement
Best integrated during construction phase. Placement crucial and species-specific: Bats often prefer south/west aspects, high up near eaves, clear flight access. Swifts high on north/east aspects. Sparrows often prefer grouping. Follow specific product guidance and BCT/RSPB advice regarding height, aspect, density, proximity to features (windows, lights).
Installation
Install flush with external wall finish. Ensure entrances are clear of mortar/render. Follow manufacturer instructions.
Maintenance
Generally low/none required for integrated units. Avoid blocking entrances during future building maintenance.
