Install Swift Boxes
Key Benefits
- Biodiversity: Provides crucial nesting sites for declining swift populations; Contributes to local biodiversity targets.
- Amenity: Enjoyment from observing swifts.
Technical Guidance
Guidance
Providing artificial nest sites is vital for conserving swifts in urban areas. Refer to guidance from RSPB, Swift Conservation etc.
Box Types: Various designs available - external boxes (wood, woodcrete, plastic) fixed to walls, or internal swift bricks integrated into the building fabric (ideal for new builds/major renovations). Choose durable, well-designed boxes.
Location & Siting: Crucial for uptake. Site high up on buildings (min 5m from ground), under eaves/gables for shelter from weather and predators. North or East-facing aspects often preferred to avoid overheating, but check local advice. Ensure clear flight path to entrance (no obstructions like wires, branches).
Grouping: Swifts are colonial; install boxes in groups (min 2-3) where possible to encourage occupation.
Installation: Fix external boxes securely to walls using appropriate fixings. Integrate swift bricks carefully during construction/renovation, ensuring internal cavity access is blocked if necessary.
Timing: Install ideally during winter/early spring before swifts return (late April/May).
Maintenance: Minimal required. Boxes generally don't need cleaning (swifts maintain basic nest hygiene). Check fixings periodically for security.
